The original painting has sold, but you can still get your hands on my painting of a vintage Taiwanese tea poster in the form of a beautifully reproduced, limited edition print.
She’s limited to 50 editions, signed, numbered and titled on the back of the print in pencil. The print runs to the edges of the paper. A smooth rag stock, 100% cotton and acid free.
This painting was inspired by vintage tea posters from Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial era, 1895 - 1945. Taiwan is still famous today for tea and is considered a producer of some of the best Oolong teas in the world. The bird in this painting is a Taiwan Bamboo Partridge, endemic to Taiwan. You can find them frequenting tea fields and mountainous areas up to 1000m.

Jade Mountain (or 玉山 / Yùshān in Mandarin) is Taiwan’s tallest mountain, measuring at 3952m. This print is the first in a series of Taiwan Baiyue {百岳 - 100 peaks) artworks I’m planning to create.
When I hiked Jade Mountain with a group of friends in December 2020 we had close encounters with these two creatures along our way. The weasel (黃鼬 - Huáng yòu) tried to steal our lunch whilst the Taiwan White-whiskered Laughingthrush (金翼白眉 - Jīn yì báiméi) shadowed our every move. I’ve painted the two creatures here having a (friendly!) playfight against the backdrop of the iconic Jade Mountain.
The print is limited to 50 editions, signed, numbered and titled along the bottom of the print in pencil. The print has a white border so can work with or without a mount. A smooth rag stock, 100% cotton and acid free.

A Taiwan Blue Magpie (台灣藍鵲) wearing the headdress of the Tsou - one of Taiwan’s aboriginal tribes.
This painting, completed in acryla gouache, was inspired by a folk story I heard whilst in Taiwan. The Taiwan Blue Magpie saved lives by bringing fire to the top of Jade Mountain to keep people warm, dying her beak and feet red in the process. She died and became a goddess to the Tsou people, this hat is often worn by young women (& is as amazing and colourful in real life as it is in the painting!)

A Fairy Pitta wearing a straw conical hat. One of my all-time favourite birds, painted in acryla gouache for my Taiwan Birds in Hats exhibition. The Fairy Pitta is known as the ‘8 colour bird - 八色鳥 - ba se niao’ in Mandarin and it’s one of the rarer birds you can spot in Taiwan

This is the third vintage Taiwanese Tea Poster I have painted as part of a series of adaptations of vintage, Japanese era posters originally painted to promote the export of Taiwanese tea overseas.
This poster features a female Mikado Pheasant (endemic to Taiwan) - see the photos for the original poster and woman she was based on.
The text reads: “台灣的茶 /總是最好“
“Táiwān de chá; zǒng shì zuì hǎo” (Taiwan’s tea; Always the best)
